Cara, our sweet baby who never ever complains or cries unless she's completely exhausted or has fallen down a flight of stairs (...no, that's never happened, although I'm not ruling anything out), had a rough night last night. A really rough one. Blood curdling screams. Methinks she was gassy - though that seems to be the answer to many of life's baby questions.
Around 11:00 last night, she started velociraptoring (totally a verb). Adam and I took turns rocking her, gave her some gas drops, and changed diapers. We shifted positions, we patted and rubbed her back, but nothing was helping. So at 11:30, I got in the car with my screaming angel and we drove. And drove. And drove. I think I now know my little town better than I did yesterday! Poor baby. She'd have a few minutes of peace, and then she'd start up again. In driving the same bumpy streets time and time again, I discovered that the lights start blinking around midnight, and I also discovered (much to my chagrin) that Wendy's drive through closes at some point before I decided to stop by for a drink. It must be Taco Bell that has the slogan "Eat Great, Even Late." (and although not the point of this post, can that really be considered "eating great?" That's suspect.)
After taking the tour of the area, around 12:30am, I pulled back in to our garage. Cara had finally found some peace (translation: between the vibration of the car and the gas drops, I think she had worked most of it out). I got her to sleep and then collapsed into my own bed around 12:50. I'm glad I didn't have to drive anymore; I'm sure if you were passing me on the road you might think I was inebriated, although I can assure you that it was just sheer exhaustion and not one drop of anything that could impair my judgement (...judgment?). She had a much better night after that; I'm glad she didn't keep the whole house up from that point on. Girl has lungs.
I'm now enjoying the largest cup of coffee I could find. The baby in my belly is WIDE AWAKE, but my eyes are still sleepy. Kids are winding down for a long winter's nap (ha ha, I wish), and I think I might have to join them to see what the fuss is all about :)
random musings of two first-time parents, two first-time sons and two first-time daughters (though they won't type much), all winging it and doing the best we can :)

Blue lips and hair craziness!
We had a really wonderful Easter. Both Adam and I were involved with the weekend church services (he sang a trio and led a service, and I sang in the choir and directed three songs), and the kids enjoyed extra nursery/children's church time, since we were there from 3pm to 9pm Saturday, and 8am to 1pm Sunday. Lots of playing, but boy, were we all exhausted!
I thought since Sunday was a rather early morning and Adam had to be in a different part of the church for his service that I'd wait until all the craziness was over to take a nice family picture. Since we were both so heavily involved, one of the teens in the church offered to go get the kids - awesome! Not going to turn that down. She picked them all up as we finished up with the service and they were waiting for us when we were done. As we rounded the corner to the main lobby (which was filled to the brim with people, BTW), Asher came charging toward us, VERY excitedly, yelling "mommyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!" That's when I noticed. In his right hand was a mostly-eaten blue ring pop.
...I think we all know what this means.
I really wish I had thought to take a picture. His WHOLE FACE was blue. Teeth, tongue, lips, cheeks, etc. He still looked completely dapper in his checkered shirt and navy pants. But his face was electric blue. Apparently the teacher of the class gave every kid an egg with a ring pop inside... who opened it and let him indulge, I may never know.
Anyhow, Adam cleaned him up and we took off soon after to go to his parents' house for an Easter dinner and family gathering. The kids had an egg hunt, and although Cara isn't in this picture (she was inside hanging out, since she probably wouldn't be a very good egg hunter), she is wearing the same dress as Joelle - just to give you a visual. Joelle's hair looked really good until about 5 minutes before the egg hunt, when she decided that her Easter basket would make a great hat.
Regardless of the blue lips and the crazy hair, they had a blast, and can't wait for next year!

Go Go Go!
Cara is a'walking!!
Even though I've seen two previous children learn how to do it, it never ceases to amaze me how a BABY can go from laying there essentially motionless, to arm and leg flailing, then flailing with purpose, then rolling, sitting, standing, stepping, and actually walking! She started taking steps a little after 11 months old, and now, at just shy of 1 year, she is sturdy as an ox (ok, maybe not quite yet, but she walks more than anything else).
Next thing I know, she'll be buying a prom dress and asking for the car keys.
For now, I will count it as a small victory when I can keep socks and shoes on the girl :)

How do you like your coffee?
This morning, I woke up feeling like I had been hit by a truck. I know you've all been there. Up a few times with various children and their various needs, and just feeling generally uncomfortable with my current sleeping position options (and if anyone says "you still have a long way to go," I will spoon your eye out, I promise).
This type of morning calls for a strong cup of Joe. I never used to drink coffee, though I always thought it smelled great. I think drinking heavily sugared and flavored coffees made me learn to love it/crave it. After a couple years of that (and I am by no means a daily coffee needer), I decided adding all those extra sugar and cream calories probably wasn't the healthiest option.
So, I tried black coffee.
Once.
And although I forced myself to drink the entire cup, I promised myself I would never again drink hot dirt water.
This morning, I am enjoying a cup of cream and sugar with a splash of coffee in it. I can liken it to drinking coffee ice cream. And YUM.

Sometimes I wonder...
...what my kids will grow up to be.
...what God has in store for my life - going back to work? What will I do, if that's the case? Where will I work? Will I stay at home through the kids' schooling? Will we home school or send them to public/private school?
...why God bothered to create stink bugs and house centipedes. What good are they, really?
...who my kids will marry.
...if we'll ever have that beach house we dream about.
...how many grandkids I'll be blessed with.
...if any of my kids will be homebodies, or if they'll all scatter around the US/world.
...why some bottled water tastes thick.
...why Joelle will eat furiously one day, and the next day she will barely eat enough to sustain an ant.
...what goes through the mind of an 11-month old.
...what is so fascinating about electrical outlets, cords, and electronic devices, especially when you have so many primary colored plastic noisemaking toys around here.
...what we will name our new little guy, and if he'll fit his name as well as we feel the others do.
...how we ever survived without online shopping, news websites, and social media.
...if this baby will come early like his sibs (and if it will be as quick!).
...if we'll ever move out of the area.
...if hypnosis would work to entice me into enjoying exercise or eating way better than I do now.
What kinds of things do you wonder?
